Senior Minister

Dr. Lawrence Murray

Dr. Lawrence Murray is a native of Los Angeles, California and he is the youngest of nine children.  He has been preaching the gospel for over 30 years.  At 12 years old, He began preaching under the tutelage of Bro. R.N. Hogan.  He has had the privilege of working with Billy Curl for 3 years in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  In 1993 the Compton Avenue Church selected him to serve as senior minister at the tender age of 25 years old.  As minister for the Compton Avenue Church, he was responsible for all pastoral duties.  In addition to his pastoral duties, Dr. Murray maintained a weekly radio broadcast on KJLH 102.3 F.M. entitled, “Let the Bible Speak.”    

Dr. Murray was loyal to the growth and development of the Compton Avenue Church for eleven solid years.  His educational background includes Southwestern Christian College, Terrell, TX.  Pepperdine University, Malibu, Ca, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and a Master of Arts in Psychology.  He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in June of 2004, and was honored with full regalia in June 2005.  His dissertation is looking at the Relationship Between perceived influence of Race Marital Satisfaction and Depression among African-American married people. 

Dr. Murray was a staff research associate at U.C.L.A’s Neuropsychiatric & Biobehavioral Institute with the renowned Dr. Gail Wyatt.  He was also privileged to work with court-mandated populations throughout the city of Los Angeles, California.  He has also worked at the King Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles; working with populations within Augustus F. Hawkins mental Health clinic.  His most critical challenge was working with children at the prestigious Children’s Institute International (CII) in Los Angeles, California.  Dr. Murray states that his exposure to Dr. Hershel Swinger (Founder/Director of Project Fatherhood-CII) was a God-send and changed the trajectory of how he parents.  Dr. Murray views his work for the Lord as his highest calling.  He states, “A personal relationship with Christ is the main objective of all true disciples.”  He also believes that the light of salvation is truly on when Christ becomes alive in the daily walk. 

Dr. Murray has been married for Twenty years to Cynthia D. Murray and they are the proud parents of Whitney Simone Murray (18), and Hannah Nicole Murray (16).  Six years ago, The Murray’s moved from Los Angeles, California to Edmond, Oklahoma.  Currently Dr. Murray is the Assistant Professor of Psychology & Family Studies/ Liberal Arts at Oklahoma Christian University.  He stays actively involved in Clinical Therapy and psychological research. He is currently writing a book on the psychological cycle of addictive behaviors. Dr. Murray is filled with passion and enjoys the craft of expository preaching and ministering to the saints in the Lord’s Church.  In 2009, Dr. Murray began serving as Missionary to the saints in Ethiopia; each year he travels to East Africa with Oklahoma Christian University students.  His primary mission is to strengthen the churches and support the Antcha School (current enrollment of 900 Pre-k- 12th grade Senior high school students) in the countryside.  He served as the Minister of the Spencer Church of Christ in Spencer, Oklahoma until the Lord moved him to cast the vision for The Way Church. He can now be heard every Sunday morning on the Heart & Soul 1140am & 92.1fm at 10:00am every Sunday morning.  His overall objective is to lead God’s people in using their gifts and edifying of the body of Christ.  His motto is: The body of Christ is not a legalistic organization, but a living organism.

Robert Davis

Robert Davis is a native of Gilbert, South Carolina and the fourth child of Milton and Lorraine Davis.  After graduating from Gilbert High School, Robert went on to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina.  Bro. Davis is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated.  Robert was pursuing entrance into medical school, when he decided to answer the undeniable call to ministry.  Lacking any foundational teaching in biblical studies, Robert was advised to enroll at Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas. While at SWCC, Robert was able to grow from deposits made by Dr. Jack Evans, Sr., Dr. James Maxwell, Dr. Ben Foster, and numerous others. After two semesters Bro. Davis was encouraged to pursue graduate work in theology.

Currently Robert is pursing a Master of Divinity Degree at Oklahoma Christian University Graduate School of Theology.  Bro. Davis has a broad concentration within his graduate program that focuses on Family Life Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Congregational Ministry.  Subsequent to obtaining an M.Div Degree, Robert's future academic endeavors include pursuit of a Doctoral Degree in New Testament Theology.

Bro. Davis is a young dynamic preacher that has been invited to participate in several gospel meetings and speaking engagements in SC, TX, and OK.  Robert utilizes the principles of expository preaching and places emphasis on practical application of scripture.  This promising preacher's future ministerial ambitions are full-time pulpit ministry and evangelism.  Within The Way Community, Robert serves as an Associate Minister as well as the Young Adults Minister.  Bro. Davis is passionate about making sure everyone is fulfilling their potential within the kingdom of God.  He currently is married to his college sweetheart Courtney Wright of Lexington, South Carolina.  Courtney is currently pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree (DNP) from Oklahoma City University.

Jeffery Givens

Jeffery L. Givens is a native of Chickasha, Oklahoma and a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.  He has served in many positions to support his faith in God.  Most recently he has started his journey to become a shepherd at The Way Community Church of Christ; he has been a worship service leader preparing men to serve the Lords supper and officiating the offering; he has served as an usher and family life group ministry leader.  Jeff graduated from Oklahoma City Community College with an Associate in Applied Science degree and studied the State of Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision to become a Certified Occupational Therapist. 

Jeff is very interested in the state of the church at all times, forever trying to think of ways to make a peaceful environment for all of the members and guest.

Jeff is married to Cynthia Givens and they have one daughter, Moneshay Marie.

Cynthia Givens

Cynthia B. Givens is a native of Chickasha, Oklahoma.  She is the youngest of 14 children born to Earnest and Edna Marie Irby.  She was born and raised in the baptist church until she married Jeff Givens and became a member of the Church of Christ.   As a member of The Way Community Church of Christ, Cynthia is helping to establish a format of service and guiding the budgetary efforts to be utilized by the leadership for the needs of the church. 

She and her husband are members of the global missionary team that her church is associated with in east Africa.  They traveled to Africa in 2012 to visit the school of Antcha in the countryside of Ethiopia.  The fundraising efforts (which was supported largely by co-workers and family) enabled she and Jeff to purchase school supplies and other items for the children at the school.  This experience has made them excited about the work that the Lord wants them to continue for their brothers and sisters in the Church of Christ on the African continent.  They share their story of this journey in order to encourage others to do this work of love across the many miles that separate us all.

Cynthia is very actively involved in church and makes every attempt to be available to all people inside and outside the church.  She is grateful and loves everything that God has provided for The Way and intends to make sure that every gift, favor or kind word offered not go unnoticed.

Lila Berry

Lila Berry is originally from Alexandria, La, but moved to Oklahoma City, Ok at the age of 12 with her mother Lorene Carolina and two siblings. She graduated from Star Spencer High, and furthered her education at the University of Oklahoma majoring in English writing with the goals of becoming an English teacher. Lila is married to her high school sweetheart Darius Berry and they have a one and a half year old, Dylan. Lila was raised in the Baptist church, but after meeting Darius she began attending the Church of Christ frequently before getting baptized in the body in 2008. She is the Executive Secretary at The Way handling all things regards to emails and communication. Lila has a background in Administration for over 5 years, and decided to use her experiences to benefit the Lord.

Darius Berry

Darius Berry is a native of Oklahoma City, OK and he has eleven siblings. His mother is Comelia Jackson married to Kenneth Jackson his father is Troy Berry. He graduated from Star Spencer High School in 2008, and was an all-star football player. Darius went to further his education at Oklahoma State University and Rose State College as a personal trainer. After school he had set goals to work for the United States Government/Tinker Air Force Base, and to live his life for Christ. He was on the training grounds learning from his father Kenneth Jackson teaching in small group/ family life ministries. On June 18, 2011 he got married to his high school sweetheart Lila Berry by the senior minister Dr. Lawrence Murray. Trying to provide for his family working back breaking jobs, getting the experience and time he needed he finally was blessed with a job at Tinker Air Force Base/DLA the same day his son Dylan was born May 22, 2012.

Brother Berry is pursuing Gods purpose for him, working and being a good example to the youth he has been asked to speak at National Youth Conference’s. He also rotates with Kenneth Jackson, his father by teaching Family life group every Saturday morning. In addition to The Way Bro. Berry is a part of the Deacon/Elder Development Ministry. He and Robert Davis are teamed up in building the Young Adult ministry teaching evangelism, exploring faith, and practical life knowledge of their generation with deep discussions.

Kenneth Jackson

Bro. Jackson has been in the Body of Christ for over 35 years. Having a passion for ministry, Kenneth has served in several area's where God has gifted him, including Cell group, Evangelism, Praise and Worship, and Youth ministries. As the S.H.A.P.E ministry leader for THE WAY church, Kenneth assists in the discovering of spiritual gifts, and placement of ministry leaders. While serving our country in the Armed Forces, where he was a Logistics Specialist, Kenneth acquired valuable life skills that prepared him for leadership opportunities. A family man, Kenneth and his beautiful wife Comelia have been married for 18 special years. They're proudest moment in life is to watch their handsome boys grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. An avid sports fan, Kenneth has a love for football, basketball, and boxing, where he fought on golden glove level. A student of word of God, Kenneth feasts daily on the bread of life. His favorite passage is Psalm 51:1-19.

Nicole Lewis

Nicole Lewis is a native of Oklahoma and the youngest of two children. Nicole has been married for 20 years to Donald Lewis a native of Louisiana. She is the mother of two children, Donald Jr. (19) and Kourtnee (14). Being the wife of a Sailor, Nicole has lived from coast to coast in places such as San Diego,CA; Great Lakes, IL; Norfolk,VA and Bellevue, NE. While living in one of her favorite locations, Great Lakes, IL, she taught the teenage girl's life class at Northshore Church of Christ. Nicole and here family moved back to Oklahoma after her husband's retirement from the U.S. Navy in 2012. She works as a Pharmacy Technician and is currently a full-time student pursuing a degree in Respitory Therapy. Nicole is an outgoing and family oriented individual who loves children and always keeps a smile on her face. She enjoys being a blessing to others and helping people anyway she can, which is why her job as Event Coordinator for The Way Community Church of Christ is perfect for her personality.
